THE PASSENGER CAR

All around you is the sound of squeaking, desperately pushing metal. It's like the whole world has forced itself forward, leaving you in a state of drug-induced vertigo. Before long, the seats will become familiar to you, but for now the fluorescent lights are blinding.
Welcome to the start of A Bullet in the Dark, everyone! This will be your catchall mingle for any thread taking place in the Passenger Car. Because of the short run of the game, instead of individual mingles being posted for different times or events, there will instead be mingles posted by location. Please note the ic hour in which your thread takes place in your header, and make sure you don't have your character in two places at once (once new locations become available).
For now, this mingle will serve as your intro log, but you'll likely find yourselves coming back around to it for other purposes in the future. As always, feel free to contact me on plurk or discord with any questions you have!

Jake Peralta; OTA
[This is not the first time Jake has woken up handcuffed to someone else.
It'd be really great to say the other time was because of some sex shenanigans. Like, maybe he woke up handcuffed to some hot chick because of their night of extreme consenting debauchery, and now they have to have a wacky and fun-filled adventure to find they key, over the course of which they learn they have so much more than just mere intense sexual compatibility in common, and fall in love . . .
But no. That is not it. Instead: it was a prank after a party in the police academy, and he'd seriously jacked up his wrist because his partner had kept yanking it and panicking. It still clicks on stormy nights. And regular nights. It's really, really jacked up, man.
That will not happen here, he thinks muzzily, and squints at the man sitting next to him.]
Hey . . .
[Hey? Hey. Hey, this isn't Amy, and what's happening, as he blinks and sits up, frowning--]
Hey. Are you okay?
002; open to literally everyone still in their seats because he's gonna just sit up and twist his head back and yell;
HEY! How many people are in here and you didn't, like, board or anything?
[Panic inducing? Maybe, but he can also see another duo handcuffed, so this is definitely a Saw-like situation, probably.]
003; so that was weird, again, open to all;
[Deals are made. Arrangements have happened. Shit got real.
Point is! He's free, Hazama is free, everyone's free and happy and his wrist hurts only a little, so good job Peralta, you genius. Now: to escape the train.
Which is harder than it looks, actually. No windows, and a locked door. Jake spends a long time looking at the tape recorder, poking and prodding it, before moving on to the box. Give him this: there seems to be a real method to the way he's observing things, before he goes and patrols around, slipping down the aisle (and maybe bumping into you?) to check out the seats.
Investigating! Part of which, of course, includes interviewing the witnesses, so--]
Hey, you mind if I ask you a few questions?
003
Yeah, sure. Hit me, man.

I believe doing so would be ... inadvisable. [ Said sort of. Carefully. ] We don't what consequences such wild guessing could have. Not to mention, a three digit lock yields just shy of a thousand different possible combinations. You'd be guessing for quite a while before you happened on the correct one. I'd suggest trying another method.

Goro Akechi | OTA | HOUR ONE
[ Honestly, it's pure instinct. As Akechi wakes up and all the stimulus starts to filter into his fuzzy head, he goes to move his hands and finds one of them stuck. Reflexively he yanks at it, harder than he intended to, only to get roughly yanked in return.
Well, THAT wakes him up in a hurry. He swallows a sound and looks sharply to his side, taking in the man he's apparently handcuffed to with a blink. ]
... ah. I see. My apologies, I didn't realize... [ A beat. He glances all around them, eyes flicking from place to place. Their chairs, the handcuffs, the briefcase, the windows... ]
... it seems we've landed ourselves in a fairly serious situation. [ But Greg will get a faint smile. ] Looks like we'll need to work together, then. Please, call me Akechi. Can I ask your name?
( ii. i want to be free )
[ Whenever he and Greg manage to get free from their handcuffs, Akechi starts investigating pretty much immediately. One of the first things he does is find an empty seat and plant a foot on it; reaching up for the luggage rack, he'll pull himself upwards so he can get a good look into the overhead storage. He'll do this pretty much anywhere ... uh, even if you're still sitting in the seat. Though if you are he'll at least pause first to smile and say: ]
Please excuse me. I'm just going to have a look above you, if that's alright.
[ He won't actually wait for your permission, though... help him, or tell this weird gremlin to get the fuck down? ]
( iii. free from this maze )
[ The car isn't terribly large, so that whole process doesn't take too long. Whenever he's done with it, he'll find a seat again and spend some time intently looking over the briefcase he found beneath the seat in front of him. It is emblazoned with a 2. ]
Interesting... I suppose we need to find the codes to unlock these. Have you seen any three-digit numbers in your searching so far?
[ A pleasant smile in your direction. ]
i
Looking around and taking in the sights, yeah. This teenager(?) is definitely right. He'd even upgrade it to "serious situation" minus the fairly, but they're here now and if they want to get out he has to cooperate with the stranger, Akechi.]

Botan | OTA | Hour One
[Well. This whole situation leaves quite a bit to be desired, but she's a young woman with a good (enough) head on her shoulders, and she can deal with it! First things first: test the limits of the handcuffs. That means yanking as hard as she can to the side to see just how far the chain will go.
It also means Cassel's in for an unpleasant wakeup call.]
Oh, dear. That looks like it smarts.
[She says, as if it isn't her fault for yanking on the chain.]
all tied up - ota;
[They haven't all managed to free themselves just yet, but that doesn't mean their mouths can't work. So, once Botan gets a rough count of the other heads on board (by shifting around to look, sorry Cassel), she calls out.]
All right, everyone! Roll call. Let's all hear your names!
sweet freedom - ota;
[Once they get out of the handcuffs by whatever means, she stands up in the aisle and stretches.]
Whew! That was unpleasant, wasn't it?

Hazel | Hour One | OTA
[So, there's this girl, right? When she wakes up she's, like, screaming and thrashing and there's nobody complaining because oh, surprise, she doesn't have a partner!]
What the fuck! What the fuck is this shit? Whoever put me here's in for a real nightmare!
[Not that she ultimately looks or sounds that threatening, but, uh, she doesn't really seem like she's thinking about key-searching, so. Maybe at least help calm her down, if you feel up for it.]
Okay cool that's over
[Once she gets out of her chair, likely with someone's help, she's rubbing her wrist and actually kind of...grinning as she wanders down the crowded aisle. To be fair, there's a bit of a sway to her steps, so maybe she's just out of it.]
Man, who thinks of this? It's like...totally out of a movie. Hey, maybe we're part of a new reality show?
locked, locked, locked
Hey, now. You'll have to get out of the handcuffs for you to give anyone a nightmare, you know!

Elliot Nightray | Hour One | Open unless it says it isn't
[Once Elliot is aware enough of his surroundings, he gives the handcuffs a couple of short but violent tugs. Sorry about that. Next he'll start trying to pry it off with his free hand. Extra apologies for the shout noted below.]
[II]
[Regardless of where you're sitting in the car in relation to him, it's pretty easy for everybody to hear Elliot's verbal reaction to this. This is in spite of the noise of the rails, yes.]
WHAT THE HELL??!!!!!
[III]
[I sure hope he actually does get out of the handcuffs, because I'm saying now that he did.
You might catch him glaring at the briefcase. He gives it a couple of sharp kicks. Then, assuming that failed or didn't set off a bomb, he just puts 0-1-4 onto the side that accepts that in the first place. It's worth a shot, right...?
Update: That one worked! Not doing much for the lock that starts with a letter, though.]
[IV]
[Alternatively, you might encounter the teen after he's freed and not messing with the briefcase. Elliot is not in a good mood. And really, whether he approaches you or vice versa, he very quickly has one question for everyone:]
Do you know anything about an assassin called the Headhunter?

BRIEFCASES SOLUTION
Everyone, we've figured out the solution to our little brief case puzzle. With Yousuke's help, I was able to deduce that the two codes needed are your briefcase number and your seat number. That is to say, for myself, my briefcase number would be zero-zero-two. [ He'll hold up his briefcase to show off that big ol' 2. ]
I believe it would be beneficial to all of us to share as much information as possible. So with that in mind, could everyone please open their briefcases and share their findings?

Ozaki Toshio | Hour One | OTA
[Now free of his handcuff, Ozaki is going to systematically make his way from one person to another.]
Does anything feel injured? Headache, dizziness, neck pain, trouble standing...? Or any injuries from the handcuffs? [thanks for making that a consideration, yoneya]
[belatedly] I'm a doctor and can help if something is wrong.
II
[Once he determines there's no major injuries on board, Ozaki will be searching methodically up and down the train. Partially to see if there's any first aid supplies, but also find anything that could give some hint to what's going on.
The briefcase gets it's own special examination as well, especially once Akechi calls out the solution.]

Cassel Sharpe | Hour One | OTA
[After he and Botan have figured out their handcuff situation, Cassel is nice enough to share with the class.]
Hey! Stop panicking! Under the seats in front of you!
[Probably could've been more gentle with that but so many people are just yelling that he might as well.]
02.
[And once that fiasco is out of the way, it's time to figure out what kind of people he's dealing with. Cassel stays off to the side as best he can to sort of observe, but something's bothering him. His eyes keep drifting down to everyone's hands, and the fact that they're bare. Which feels... wrong for some reason. It makes him uncomfortable.
Maybe catch him staring or ask what he's looking at, either way he probably won't like it!]
03.
[When he's not oggling weirdly at people's hands, Cassel tries to gather more information. He has some ideas, but he needs to know more. Which means it's question time, nearest person.]
Hey. Where are you from? I'm trying to figure out how dedicated the person who set this up is.
I
It can't really be that simple...

Kissin' Kate Barlow | Hour One
[It takes Kate a little longer to come to than most of the others on the train. Lucky for Izumi, though, she doesn't immediately start yanking on her handcuff like some of the others? Y'all raised in a barn...
Instead, she rubs her eyes to chase the blur of the drugs away, and then palms her belt for her gun.
Which, of course, isn't there. Go figure. She groans, and then turns her attention to the kid next to her.]
And you are?
two - ota
[Huzzah, Kate is (presumably) free from handcuff hell, and she's leaned against the rear door of the car, watching the small crowd hunt for clues and fight with handcuffs and briefcases.
Her eyes flick up at you when you approach. She offers... not a smile, exactly, but her lips twitch briefly in greeting.]
You ever been on a train before?
two
[Keiko has had some time to... well, not get used to the situation, but the numbness has worn off at least. And with so many people exploring their small space, she's decided the best way to move forward is introduce herself to her fellow captors.]
That's what makes this so strange... they've always been safe, and now suddenly I'm locked up on a train I don't recognize with everyone else.

Okay . . . so let's solve a mystery, huh?
[AND FIND A KILLER, but, like, maybe he won't point that out, killers tend to not like it when you say you're going to catch them, he'll just keep looking for them on the DL.]
So. So we've all got numbers, and there's no real correlation with numbers and people that we've found so far. Jigsaw over here's given us seven hours to either be the last man standing, which we are not going to do, or figure out his full name.
Wait.

slides in a day late with starbucks
tail end of hour three;
Let's regroup! Go over all the stuff we've found, come in here!
no subject
[ Heeeeere's mini detective with Greg and Cassel in tow, probably!!! ]
We have some findings to share from the observation car. If we gather most of the group here, I'd also like to review the locks we've found that we haven't been able to solve: the six-letter lock on the ice bucket, and the four-letter lock on the seat in the observation car. Clues in the observation car don't seem to be for that lock, so my guess is we'll need information from other cars to solve that lock. This may be true of the ice bucket as well.
In the meantime, here are the two notes we discovered.
[ On the first note, the writing is poetic and thoughtful, giving the impression of a deeply personal and self-reflective personality. There are places where the pen was held too long in contemplation, creating pools of bleeding ink:
"I keep looking up at the lights. The longer I look at them, the more I feel like the world takes shape in a way that Van Gogh must have seen the starry sky. The sounds of the accusations and mutual hatreds bleed away and then I just see the people behind them. Is that who they really are? Or is this just a collage of fear and desperation?
I’m afraid, too."
On the second note, the handwriting is bubbly and romantic. The kind of script you’d expect to see in a young girl’s diary. All that’s missing is hearts for dots:
"Three hits in one room? As long as they don’t see what’s on me, it’s not like they’ll ever find out. I’m more worried about the pig, but he seems like a damn sucker, anyway." ]

Beginning of Hour 4
[ he raises his voice for this, so he'll be hard to miss! once he thinks he has sufficient attention: ]
I intend to stay here and work on the evidence we've gathered so far. To that end, would everyone be willing to entrust me with what's been discovered so far? Specifically, I mean anything written. Notes, newspaper clippings, anything of that sort. I wouldn't mind being able to take a closer look at everyone's items, as well, but I understand perfectly should anyone not be willing to part with them.
If anyone would like to remain here to help, I'd certainly welcome that, as well.
[ AND WITH THAT he's just going to chill here for hour 4 unless someone asks him to come check something out!!! ]

This one's in an elegant, stylized, and practiced hand...although it seems a bit erratically written, in this case.
I didn’t mean to do it. I swear, I didn’t. I know the kind of person I am but it was all just a bluff and they surprised me and I acted on reflex. Are they going to call me a murderer, now? Are they going to chase me down and get me back when I’m not even the one that started it? This is so wrong...so fucking wrong.]
Sounds like we had an accidental murder on the first train. Me and Yoneya were thinking it might've been done with the switchblade, seeing as that's the only real weapon we got.

He's going to grab the chair leg.]

[And then he starts heading off to the dining car.]

Guys, take a look at this... I don't know what it means yet, but--
[Hey, it's something. Also uh, given how badly she botched the turpentine can, people are welcome to look at the photograph, but she will insist it's given back. +_+ No making the same mistake twice]

Interesting that we see an artist. I believe Greg found a magazine article that had to do with art. I believe "Henrietta" is, however, a new name to us, unless I've missed something.
